Court Remands Civil Defence Officer Over Forgery Charges

Must read

‎A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting in Apo, Abuja, has ordered the remand of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer, Mr. Jubrin Buba, at the Kuje Correctional Centre for repeatedly failing to appear in court to face trial on charges bordering on forgery.

‎The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which is prosecuting the case, accused Mr. Buba of using a forged academic certificate to gain employment with the NSCDC.

‎According to a statement issued by the ICPC spokesperson, Demola Bakare, fsi, the defendant had in February 2015 allegedly presented a forged Bachelor of Science degree certificate in Public Administration, purportedly issued by the University of Jos in October 2009.

‎The Commission said the act violated Section 366 of the Penal Code and is punishable under Section 364, both of which prohibit the presentation of forged documents as genuine.

‎Mr. Buba was first arraigned in 2022 before Justice Asma’u Akanbi of the FCT High Court, Kubwa, and granted bail. However, following Justice Akanbi’s elevation to the Court of Appeal, the matter was reassigned to Justice Binta Dogonyaro of Court 46, Apo, for a fresh trial.

‎Despite receiving proper court notices alongside his counsel, Mr. Buba failed to appear for his re-arraignment scheduled for 22nd January 2025, and again on subsequent dates, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

‎He was eventually apprehended and brought before the court on 26th June 2025. At the hearing, Justice Dogonyaro revoked his previous bail and ordered his remand at the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kuje.

‎The matter has been adjourned to 27th and 28th October 2025 for continuation of hearing.
