The Kaduna State Contributory Health Management Authority (KADCHMA) on Tuesday inaugurated a grassroots sensitisation campaign in Kudan Local Government Area (LGA).
The initiative targeted okada riders, farmers, butchers, and bricklayers, among other informal sector workers.
Also included were ward development committees, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and women’s groups.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign aims to encourage enrolment in the state’s health insurance scheme.
The campaign, part of the informal sector enrolment drive inaugurated on July 21 in Kudan (and set to roll out in Kagarko and Chikun), is taking place across all 23 LGAs.
It is supported by EngenderHealth Consortium, International Society for Media in Public Health (ISMPH), Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), and Legislative Advocacy Initiative for Sustainable Development Goals (LISDEL).
KADCHMA Director-General, Abubakar Hassan, explained that the sensitisation aimed to educate informal workers about the scheme’s benefits, quality healthcare without financial hardship.
He highlighted its alignment with the governor’s rural transformation agenda and the urgent need to reduce maternal mortality.
The scheme, costing N10,650 annually per individual, covers a wide range of services, including antenatal care and maternity, offering financial protection against unexpected medical expenses.
Hassan encouraged participants to become enrolment ambassadors.
Participants expressed gratitude and pledged to spread the message. Okada rider Sunusi Jibril said, “I never knew I could access quality healthcare at such an affordable rate.
“I am definitely going to enrol, to protect myself and my family.”
Another farmer, Sani Ishaq noted the risks he faced and the financial relief the scheme offered.
The Director-General also visited the Primary Healthcare Centre in Kudan, urging women to enrol in the scheme for better access to essential health services.
