Abuja, Nigeria – The NNPC Foundation Ltd/Gte, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), has unveiled three major programs targeting healthcare, education, and agricultural development, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable national growth.

1. Restoring Vision: 6,000 Free Cataract Surgeries

Building on the success of its pilot phase in the South-West, where 1,002 successful surgeries (including minors born blind) were performed, the Foundation is scaling up its free cataract intervention to the South-East and South-South regions beginning March 31, 2025, with subsequent rollouts in the North and FCT.

  • Why it matters: Cataracts account for 43% of blindness cases in Nigeria.
  • Target: 6,000 beneficiaries (1,000 per geopolitical zone), including free screenings, surgeries, and post-operative care.

2. Boosting STEM Education: 25,000 Books for 25 Schools

To address Nigeria’s STEM education gap, the Foundation will distribute 25,000 science textbooks and branded bookshelves to 25 secondary schools across 24 states and the FCT in its second phase. This follows the first phase, where 15,000 books reached 12 states and the FCT.

  • Goal: Improve access to quality STEM resources and inspire future innovators.

3. Empowering Farmers: Training for 6,000 Vulnerable Agriculturists

A nationwide agricultural training program will kick off from April 7–11, 2025, starting with 1,000 farmers in the South-East and South-South. Participants will learn: Climate-smart farming techniques, Organic fertilization, and Post-harvest loss reduction.

Quote from MD, NNPC Foundation:
“These initiatives are strategic investments in Nigeria’s future. By restoring sight, equipping students, and empowering farmers, we’re building a healthier, more prosperous nation,” said Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation.
