Senate repeals, reenacts N35.5trn 2024 Appropriation Bill

The Senate, at its emergency session on Wednesday repealed and reenacted the 2024 Appropriation Act of N35.5 trillion.

The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) initiated the move through a bill titled “Rescission and Committal of the 2024 Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill”.

The Senate recalled that the 2024 Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill was passed by both chambers and was transmitted to the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA) for onward transmission to the President for his assent.

“Observes that after critical examination of the Bill, the Directorate of Legal Services of the National Assembly observed some fundamental issues which requires fresh legislative action on the following sections: long title, clauses 1,13, 14 and explanatory memorandum.

The Senate said it was aware that a technical committee of the Senate, House of Representatives and Directorate of Legal Services met and worked on the Bill

The upper chamber relied on order 1(b) of Senate Standing Order to rescind its decision on the Bill as passed and re-commit same to the Committee of the Supply for re-consideration and passage.

The reenacted 2024 budget of N35.55 trillion is broken down as follows: N1 trillion for statutory transfers, N8.270trillion for debts servicing, N11.268 trillion recurrent expenditure and N13.273 trillion for capital projects.

With this reenactment, the 2024 Appropriation Act of N28. 7 trillion, which was amended before the legislature went on recess to include N6.2 trillion for minimum wage has now come to N35.55 trillion.
