In his remarks, Minister Badaru acknowledged the vital role of the UN in global peace efforts and reiterated Nigeria’s support for the Non-Aligned Movement and the African Group.

He stressed the urgent need for progress in nuclear disarmament, emphasizing the profound threat nuclear weapons pose to international security and human welfare.

“Nuclear weapons cannot be justified in light of pressing socio-economic challenges,” Badaru stated, calling on Nuclear-Weapon States to honor their obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to take immediate steps toward a nuclear-weapon-free world. He highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon use, which adversely affect health, the environment, and economic stability.

The Minister also expressed Nigeria’s strong endorsement of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), commending the nations that have ratified it and urging others to do the same.

In addition to advocating for disarmament, Badaru reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, praising the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its monitoring efforts.

He concluded with a resolute statement on the path to disarmament: “While the path to disarmament is challenging, we must remain focused and resolute. Nigeria will continue to play its part in ensuring a safer world for future generations.”
