The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a N10.3 billion contract for the procurement of essential medical products aimed at improving accessible and affordable healthcare services for Nigerians. The announcement was made by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Pate, during a briefing with State House correspondents after the fourth FEC meeting of the year, held on Wednesday.

The approved funds will be allocated to several critical healthcare initiatives, including:

  1. Third-Line Antiretroviral Drugs for HIV Patients (N997 Million)

  2. Dr. Pate emphasized the importance of this procurement, particularly in light of shifting global health financing trends. “This will ensure that Nigerians living with HIV continue to receive the treatment they require, even as we transition toward greater domestic financing,” he said.
  3. Locally Manufactured Diabetes Diagnostic Kits (N2 Billion)

  4. Diabetes, a rapidly growing health concern in Nigeria, will be addressed through the procurement of locally produced diagnostic kits. “Many Nigerians suffer from diabetes, and some are unaware of their condition. These kits will help monitor blood glucose levels and improve early detection,” the minister explained. The kits are manufactured by a Lagos-based company, aligning with the government’s efforts to unlock the healthcare value chain by supporting local manufacturers.
  5. Medical Relief Programme (N4.5 Billion)

  6. In line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to lower the cost of medical commodities, N4.5 billion has been allocated for the procurement of antibiotics, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic medications. These will be distributed to healthcare facilities to reduce costs for patients.
  7. Mobile X-Ray Machine and CT Scan Rehabilitation (N2.1 Billion)

  8. The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi will receive a mobile X-ray machine and a 64-slice CT scan as part of efforts to enhance diagnostic and clinical care services. Dr. Pate highlighted that the upgrades will position the hospital as a referral center not only for Bauchi State but also for the wider region.

Supporting Local Manufacturing
Dr. Pate reiterated the government’s commitment to patronizing local manufacturers, noting that the diabetes diagnostic kits are produced in Nigeria. “This initiative brings to life our efforts to unlock the healthcare value chain and encourage local production,” he said.

The minister also emphasized the broader goal of the approvals: to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all Nigerians. “These investments reflect our commitment to improving the quality of healthcare services and ensuring that Nigerians receive the care they need,” he concluded.
