The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, has taken a significant step toward sustainable energy by commissioning an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the charging station was unveiled on Thursday at the headquarters of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) in collaboration with the Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC).

A Leap Toward Sustainable Energy

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, described the project as a pivotal milestone in Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy solutions. He emphasized that the initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to embracing technological advancements in energy and transportation.

“This partnership marks a significant step toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future,” Nnaji stated. “It aligns with global trends in electric mobility and demonstrates our resolve to reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and promote green innovations.”

The minister highlighted that the project reflects President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes reducing Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuels and fostering a cleaner, greener economy.

“I am proud to witness this bold stride toward cleaner mobility,” Nnaji said. “As we commission this charging station today, let us collectively work toward expanding this initiative across the nation, ensuring that electric mobility becomes a viable and widespread reality in Nigeria.”

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to driving technological advancement, attracting investment, and creating sustainable employment opportunities in the green economy.

A Vision for Clean Energy

Earlier, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, explained that the EV charging station was designed for sustainable operation and long-term durability. He noted that the project aligns with the presidential declaration on climate change and Nigeria’s clean energy policy, which aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through the use of solar energy.

Abdullahi revealed that the station features fast-charging technology, enabling a typical electric vehicle to be fully charged in approximately 30 minutes.

“This is a Skilowatt solar-powered facility capable of operating on both the public grid and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems,” he said. “It is equipped with a 20-kilowatt lithium battery and a BVA intelligent inverter to ensure efficient charging and maintainability.”

Gratitude and Collaboration

The ECN Director-General expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, as well as the technical partner, the Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC), for their collaboration in bringing the project to fruition. He also commended the management and staff of the ECN for their unwavering support in achieving this milestone.

The commissioning of the EV charging station marks a significant step in Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable energy and electric mobility, setting the stage for a greener and more environmentally conscious future.
