The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for de-escalation of hostilities between Israel and Palestinians as violence rages following deadly cross-border skirmishes launched against Israel by Palestinian militant group, Hamas that based in the besieged Gaza Strip.
In a press statement signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Yusuf Maitama Tuggar said, “The cycle of violence and retaliation that the current escalation has assumed, only serves to perpetuate an unending cycle of pain and suffering for the civilian population, that bear the brunt of every conflict.” The minister said.
In the early morning of Saturday, Hamas-affiliated militant group that has been controlling Gaza, and launching intermittent rocket attacks into Israel, launched a full-scale assault into Israel, firing thousands of rockets that overwhelmed Israel’s air defense systems, killing over 200 Israelis and injuring over 1000 civilians according to Reuters . In response, the Israel Defense Force launched dozens of airstrike against Hamas’ targets in Gaza which according to reports have killed over 240 civilians.
The Nigerian Foreign policy which maintains neutral stance in the Israel-Palestinian conflict, has been advocating for peaceful resolution to the conflict that has killed thousands of people over the past three decades with no end in sight.

According Tuggar, both sides should prioritize safety of civilians by exercising restraint and allowing the humanitarian aids to reach the besieged civilains.
“We are therefore, calling for peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue,” Tuggar added.
