Conflicting narratives and political spin have clouded a recent confrontation between Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed. But eyewitness accounts reveal a far different story than the one being peddled by the governor’s camp.

The Provocation: A Disrespectful Remark Sparks Outrage
What began as a routine meeting in the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima quickly turned sour when Governor Bala Mohammed’s entourage allegedly made disparaging remarks directed at Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar.
However, the real flashpoint came when Governor Mohammed himself reportedly insulted Tuggar’s father—a revered elder statesman who played key roles in Nigeria’s First and Second Republics. The Minister, known for his composure, was visibly incensed by the disrespect.
“You know that’s not true,” a high-ranking source present at the meeting told our correspondent, dismissing claims that Tuggar was physically assaulted. “The Minister is an athlete, physically fit. If it came to a fight, it’s impossible for him to be slapped without a response. The story is entirely fabricated—just the machinations of the governor’s loyalists.”
Confrontation and Retreat: A Show of Defiance
Eyewitnesses say Tuggar immediately confronted the governor, demanding he repeat the insult while making it clear that such disrespect would not be tolerated. The bold challenge reportedly caused Governor Mohammed to back down, his earlier bravado fading as the tension in the room escalated.
When Bauchi’s Deputy Governor attempted to intervene, Tuggar swiftly shut him down, asserting that the matter was strictly between him and Governor Mohammed.
No Blows Exchanged, But Political Damage Control Begins
Despite sensational claims circulating on social media, no physical altercation occurred. Instead, Vice President Shettima, sensing the rising hostility, reportedly called upon former Governor Adamu Mu’azu to mediate and defuse the situation.
Political analysts suggest that the false narrative of Tuggar being “slapped” or humiliated is a deliberate smear campaign aimed at undermining the Foreign Minister’s reputation. Given Tuggar’s rising profile as a no-nonsense diplomat, the incident has exposed deeper rivalries within Nigeria’s political elite.
The Bigger Picture: A Battle of Credibility
Governor Bala Mohammed’s camp has been quick to circulate its version of events, but multiple sources present at the meeting insist that the governor’s supporters are distorting the truth to save face. The altercation, while verbal, underscores the volatile nature of political egos—and the lengths some will go to control the narrative.
As both sides trade accusations, one thing is clear: this clash was not just about personal slights, but about power, respect, and who gets to dictate the story.
