10 things to know about  the new ICPC chairman, Musa Aliyu

According to the ICPC, corruption in Nigeria undermines democratic institutions, retards economic growth, and contributes to leadership failure in various segments of socioeconomic development. Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, and perverting the rule of law to address this, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a new czar who has what it takes to make a dent in financial crimes in Nigeria.

Here are 10 things you need to know about  the new ICPC chairman, Musa Adamu Aliyu

  1. He was born on the  27th of December 1977, in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where he completed his early education from Central Primary School Birnin Kudu, to Government College Bauchi and to Bayero University Kano, where he obtained his LL.B degree from Bayero University Kano in 2003, an LL.M Degree in Islamic Law in 2011 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a PhD degree in 2019 at the School of Law, Universiti Utara Malaysia.
  2. Dr. Aliyu started his career as a lawyer at AKI P.A. and Company in Gombe State and later moved to A.A. Umar & Co. in Kano, established by the late Aliyu Umar SAN.
  3. He served as the Vice-Chairman of the NBA, Kano Branch from 2016-2017, Chairman Human Rights Committee of the NBA Kano Branch, 2016 – 2017; Secretary of the Continuing Legal Education Committee in 2014 – 2016 and member of the Anti-Corruption Committee, of the branch in 2012 – 2014.
  4. Dr. Musa Aliyu was appointed as the Jigawa State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice by the past governor of the state, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, on September 30, 2019, leading several reforms in the justice sector. Focusing on promoting the rights of women and children and laying a solid foundation for public complaints and anti-corruption commission in the state. 
  5. During his spell as the Attorney General of Jigawa State Government, he digitized the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice to improve productivity and transparency. With the invaluable assistance of critical stakeholders, they were able to develop and submit the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice Strategic Plan for 2023–2027 to the State Executive Council for approval.
  6. Moreover, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu is also a philanthropist who has provided many services to his community. It is believed that to see the change you want happening in your society, you give back to the community in which you found yourself.
  7. He has collaborated closely with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and other reputable civil society organizations to enhance capacity building efforts within the policing, anti-corruption and correctional service reform space.
  8. He was also named as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria-designate in October 2023. Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, was conferred with the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Chief Justice of the Federation, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON on 12th October 2023 and sworn-in on 27th November 2023.
  9. At the Supreme Court, in his personal efforts to promote the deepening of democracy, he involved in a recent case with the Kaduna State Government and other states, together, they challenged the Naira redesignation policy and taken the issue before the Supreme Court of Nigeria and played an important effort to protect the rights of citizens and promote democracy in Nigeria in the case of; AG KADUNA STATE V AG OF THE FEDERATION (2023) 12 NWLR (PT. 1899)
  10. The new ICPC boss was appointed by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Force, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, as Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) on 17th October 2023 and sworn into office on Wednesday 13th December 2023 after being confirmed by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
