Nigeria condoles with Morocco over devastating earthquake

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condoled with Morocco over the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck South Western parts of Marrakech, claiming over 2000 lives and injuring thousands more as rescuers race to rescue thousands of people trapped under the rubbles.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the foreign ministry, Mrs. Francisca K. Omayuli, Nigeria is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake which has brought destruction and suffering to the people of Morocco, offering condolences to the victims.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria commiserates with the Government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco over the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck South-Western Marrakech late on Friday, 8th September, 2023,” the statement said.

The ministry also offered sincere condolences that to the families of the victims who have died or injured as a result of the earthquake.

“Nigeria is deeply saddened by the impact of the earthquake that left over a thousand people dead and several others injured. The government and the people of Nigeria extend their deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the statement added.

The earthquake in Morocco is one of the deadliest earthquakes that hit Morocco in decades.

According to reports, the death toll is likely to climb much higher as rescuers and volunteers rush to extract thousands of people trapped under collapsed buildings.
