Ghana receives artifacts looted 150 years ago

Must read

Seven artifacts from the ancient Asante kingdom that were taken by the British 150 years ago, and kept by a museum in the United States, were returned.

The artifacts, which include an elephant tail whisk and an ornamental chair, found their way to the Fowler Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1960s.

“We are here … (because) the white man came into Asanteman to loot and destroy it,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the king of the Assante kingdom in Ghana’s largest city of Kumasi, said.

The items were returned unconditionally and permanently, although replicas will be allowed to be made, according to the museum.
